Meet the Blogger: Ami from Undercover Superhero

As much as I love writing blog posts for you full of blogging, search engine optimization, and Pinterest tips, it’s also important to me to build a platform that helps other bloggers/digital business owners grow as well. As a blogger, it’s important to always find new ways to be visible online and to find opportunities to be discovered by new readers.

That’s why I decided to start a recurring item on She Can Blog called Meet the Blogger! I will interview bloggers/digital business owners about their blogs/businesses and experiences. Who are these bloggers/entrepreneurs, what type of blog/business do they run, what drives them, how do they drive traffic to their websites and what else can you learn from them?

Who are you and what type of blog do you have?

Hello, I’m Ami, 26 and from Norfolk. I love all things Marvel and I’m obsessed with Loki/Tom Hiddleston! I’m disabled due to hearing loss, central vision loss, Sensory Ataxia and Transverse Myelitis. I’m married to Ewan, and we have a daughter, Daisy.

I have a multiple-niche blog, my main topics are disability, parenting, Marvel and reviews. But I like to talk about whatever floats my boat really.

Why did you start blogging?

I started Undercover Superhero in October 2018, a month before I was discharged from a specialist neurological rehabilitation centre after a 9-month hospital stay, as I wanted to document my ongoing recovery and hopefully process what had happened. Also, I wanted to help others feel less alone if they ever were in the same situation as I was.

It’s since evolved into a little space on the internet where people can raise awareness of their disabilities, chronic illness, impairments, mental illnesses, and more. There are currently over 65 guest posts in the ‘The Reality of…’ series and it will be resuming in the new year.

What makes your blog stand out compared to other blogs in your niche?

I’m probably not the best person to answer this as my inner critique is saying nothing. I’d like to think my blog stands out for its transparency, my blog has helped me to be more open and to actually like who I am. I know readers would say my blog is inspiring, because of what I’ve shared of my recovery story so far, but I’m telling it exactly how I remember it.

Which aspects of blogging do you like the most? Which aspects do you dislike?

I love connecting with other bloggers, I’ve made a few good friends in my 3 years of blogging and I can’t imagine life without them now. I love really getting stuck in with writing, especially when I’ve already convinced myself that I haven’t got a clue how to start this post and then my fingers won’t stop typing.

The one aspect I dislike so much is promoting my content, I just can never get the right balance of promoting too little or too much, it’s very frustrating! I love sharing other bloggers’ content, always happy to do that!

Which social media platforms do you use the most to promote your blog posts?

Twitter is the platform I use the most. I try and take part in blog comment threads when I get time and I always return comments, but attracting traffic and promoting is something I really need to improve on!

I’ve currently got one pin on my Pinterest account and I’m hoping to create more pins so that Pinterest can become a source of traffic. I’ve kind of given up with Facebook and Instagram, I don’t know how people manage to post daily photos/reels/stories… it’s exhausting just thinking about it!

Which strategies do you use to get more eyes on your content?

I went self-hosted 3 months ago and since using the Rank Math SEO plugin, I love learing how to optimise my content. It’s very satisfying when I’m writing a post, looking at the areas I can improve on for SEO, then the colours change to green. That’s my only strategy at the moment.

I’ve only recently started taking my blog more seriously, especially since going self-hosted, so other than SEO, I don’t have any other strategies (I know, you’re probably wincing).

Which SEO tactic has helped you the most to improve the SEO of your website?

Learning what keyword density means, minimum word count that counts towards SEO, I’m still learning and all the tips Rank Math provide help me so much. I have a tendency to write long-form content anyway but it’s reassuring to know I pass the minimum.

Any advice you’d like to pass along to beginning bloggers?

You will always find a blog post telling you to do this, do that – it’s very easy to get caught up in the bloggersphere. My advice is before you even create a blog, work out what YOU want to write about, connect with other bloggers who blog about similar topics to what you want to write content about and ask for their advice too.

Don’t struggle alone, the majority of bloggers I’ve reached out to and asked for advice on something, have always been happy to help. Always remain true to you, don’t write content that you’re not happy with.

What’s in store for the rest of 2022? What can readers expect if they start following you?

Currently, I have 2 stationery reviews to write up, 2 monthly round-ups and there will be a new segment on my blog where me and another blogger chat all things blogging – for example, what questions have popped up in the bloggersphere recently and we share our opinions, then encourage readers to express their views.
